Spotify Picks True Crime South Africa for Africa Day Celebrations

True Crime South Africa was recently lucky enough to be 1 of 6 podcasts from the African continent to be selected by Spotify to participate in their Africa Day celebrations on 25 May 2022.

To commemorate the occasion, Spotify celebrated local voices through the new Sounds of Africa campaign.

The campaign highlighted six artists and six podcasters and came to life through a social media campaign in the week leading up to 25 May.

The six podcasters included Kenya’s Mantalk and The Sandwich Podcast, Nigeria’s I Said What I Said and Tea with Tay, South Africa’s True Crime ZA, and After School is After School with Sis G.U. The six artists were Kenya’s Chris Kaiga and Nikita Kering’, Nigeria’s Ladipoe and Preyé, and South Africa’s Nomfundo Moh and Zoë Modiga.

“African creators are doing amazing things in the music and audio content creation space. Moreover, the stories of this crop of creatives are helping others find their passions and their voices,” said Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa.

As part of this, the platform included TCSA in a digital marketing campaign aimed at driving traffic to the podcast. I was also invited to their in-person event in JHB which I was, unfortunately, unable to attend due to prior commitments, but I understand that at the event they announced a $100,000 grant they will be creating to split among 10 different creators from the African continent to help grow independent podcasting.

Details of the grant applications are still to be announced. This is a phenomenal initiative from Spotify and I am very grateful to have been included.
