“Former Air Force sergeant Flippie Venter, convicted of strangling a child prostitute in Burundi and later wiping out his children with an R4 rifle, will be released on parole after serving 13 years, Rapport reported on Sunday“.
I hadn’t heard about today’s case until I saw a recent article on News 24 which I posted to our FB group. You all reacted with as much horror as I did and asked for an episode on the case. The case is topical again at the moment because the offender in question has been granted parole. Another reason I wanted to cover this case is because there is a victim involved who never really had a voice and although she got what some might call justice, I felt she deserved for her story to be told.
In 2004, Flippie Venter was on a peacekeeping mission in Burundi with the SANDF when he was arrested for the rape and murder of a 14-year-old child prostitute. While out on bail and awaiting trial for this crime, he grew concerned that his family would cut ties with him if he were to be found guilty. He picked up an R4 rifle and made the decision for them
