In this week’s spotlight minisode we discuss two very different cases which both represent cautionary tales – the murder of Abongile Mafalala and the murder of Magda van Heerden.
Abongile Mafalala
Mafalala, 31, from Dunoon was publicly murdered after false allegations of alleged kidnapping arose in the area.
Hundreds of residents came out, beat and stoned Mafalala and then set him and his vehicle, a Toyota Avanza, alight on the open field next to the M5.
Social media was flooded with graphic videos of Mafalala being beaten and set alight.
Magda van Heerden
Magda van Heerden died in November 2021
Barnie van Heerden (56) said his wife, Magda (51), had been in hospital for the past two months where she had been fighting an infection and her heart eventually failed.
The couple’s son, Ruan van Heerden and two others, were arrested after the couple had been attacked at their home in Pierre van Ryneveld Park.
Magda was stabbed 36 times and never fully recovered after the attack. Barnie was also stabbed and beaten with a golf club. His arm was also broken during the attack.
