The Murder of Sinoxolo Mafevuka – Epidode 58

On the 2nd of March 2016, a young boy on his way to school discovered the body of a woman in a communal toilet. The investigation that followed would highlight many of the deep inequities in our society and leave a family desperate for answers.

Sinoxolo Mafevuka was last seen on March 1, 2016, at around 7 pm heading to the communal toilets 200 metres from her home in Khayelitsha. She and her sister-in-law were cooking supper and the teen left her cellphone behind thinking that she would be back shortly.

The 19-year-old’s half-naked body was found spread-eagled in one of the leaking toilet cubicles a few hours later. She had been raped and her clothes were stuffed in a cistern. Her face was jammed under the toilet seat.

Two weeks after the murder, two young men would be arrested — but rather than delivering justice, the arrests and ensuing trial would only serve to bring to light how badly Mafevuka had been let down.
