Spotlight Minisode 3

In this week’s True Crime South Africa Spotlight minisode we discuss the scourge of gender-based violence and do a deep dive into some interesting information that emerged during the pre-sentencing hearing of the last three Electus per Deus members.

Zak Valentine, Cecilia Steyn and Marcel Steyn were found guilty of a range of charges emanating from a murder, robbery and fraud spree between 2012 and 2016 in which 11 people lost their lives.

We covered the so-called Krugersdorp Killers in Episode 4 of True Crime South Africa.

In August in South Africa, we celebrated Women’s Month. The public holiday we observe on the 9th August commemorates the day that 20 000 women marched to the union building in 1956 to present a petition to the then Prime Minister JG Strijdom in protest against the pass laws which governed their movements at that time.

The phrase, “Strike a woman, Strike a Rock” was developed during this march and went on to describe the strength of South African women. 63 years later Women’s month 2019 was commemorated with the senseless slaughter of far too many women. Meghan Kremer, Uyinene Mrwetyana, Lynette Volschenk, Janika Mallo, Leighandre Jegels and Jesse Hess were all viciously murdered in August. This is beside the numerous women whose names never made it to the media.
